So he said to them, “I am a Hebrew; and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.” Jonah 1:9 NKJV
Jonah was caught in an act of flagrant rebellion. God had told him to preach repentance to the people of Nineveh. But Jonah didn’t like the Ninevites, so he took off in the opposite direction from where he was supposed to go.
When the tempest came and the sailors found out the cause – Jonah’s disobedience to God – they asked him to explain himself. The very first words from his mouth were a complete antithesis to his actions. “I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.” Yet his behavior didn’t match his profession.
Most of us have heard the expression, “Practice what you preach.” If you genuinely believe what you say – what you profess – then your life, your actions, and behaviors should reflect accordingly. Don’t just talk the talk, walk the talk.
Prayer: Today, I choose to practice what I preach, Lord. May there be no discrepancy between what I profess and the way that I live out my faith in Christ. May my actions align with my testimony. In your name I pray, Amen.
Thought: Don’t let your life and your lips preach two different messages
