But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope; the steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
Lamentations 3:21-23 (ESV)
Post-Christmas blues are common. So much time and energy – not to mention money – are spent on this one day that many experience a significant letdown after the presents have been unwrapped, the stockings emptied, and all that’s left of the turkey is a pile of bones. The mixture of anticipation and excitement wear off faster than a temporary tattoo.
Thankfully, God’s love and mercies are not doled out according to the calendar. They are not dependent on God’s moods and whims. Today’s verse serves as a reminder that God offers us gift upon gift every day of the year, January 1st through December 31st.
Thou in the midst of intense trouble, Jeremiah recalls five important truths:
1/ God’s love is steadfast, immovable, it never wavers.
2/ His love never ceases.
3/ His mercies never run out.
4/ His mercies are brand-new every morning.
5/ God is faithful.
God’s mercies may be hard to perceive when our faith is put to the flame. We might be hard-pressed to acknowledge His faithfulness when we are in the pit. Yet God’s word affirms that God’s love is the one constant we can count on, even when our world suggests otherwise. His love does not depend on our performance or our circumstances. God’s love and mercies rest on His promises. They never waver or run out. Thus, we have hope.
To those of us who have placed our trust in Christ, every dawn is Christmas morning. All that He is and offers us is packaged and waiting for us to unwrap and claim as our own. So go ahead; thank God, then open your gift. It’s everything you need for today plus a tad more.
