In the face of all that seems wrong in our lives, in our country, and in our world, this one promise holds true that we have hope: death is not the end, it is merely “a turning of us over from time to eternity” (William Penn).
Jesus piles one benefit on top of another. As if forgiveness, healing and redemption weren’t enough, He tops it off with love and mercy. Then He adds satisfaction and renewed strength.
It is tempting, at times, to believe that our jobs, our money, our health, our family, and our ministry are the fruits of our lifestyle, choices, and hard work. They’re ours, we’ve earned them. We hold job, salary, rank, title, in high regard. We set great store by becoming self-sufficient and self-sustaining. And this mentality cracks the door to pride.

Unless we acknowledge that we are just as much in need of God’s mercy and forgiveness as the next person – regardless of their past–then we have not fully grasped the meaning of grace.
Can I praise my Savior all the day long when a favorite possession is ruined? Much more importantly, how about when a particular hope or dream of mine is busted right down the middle, or when a promising relationship fractures? Can my heart still whistle a happy tune?
Following Christ doesn’t mean we won’t have ‘cave moments.’ But we don’t let those ‘cave moments’ win. They may refine us, but they won’t define us.
