Therefore, gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 1:13
I have a hate/love relationship with social media. While it allows me to remain in contact with family and friends all over the globe, social media can be a terrible instrument in the hands of the wrong people. I don’t need to tell you it has been the cause of so many suicides; words that destroy a person’s character and gouge irreparable holes in their heart.
Because the mind is so easily influenced, Peter urges believers to ‘gird up the loins of your mind.’ In ancient days, men would tuck up the hem of their robes into a type of girdle in preparation for imminent action (1 Kings 18:46). In our modern culture, we might use the expression ‘prepare your mind.’
God calls His children to exercise their minds, to be active in their thinking rather instead of readily accepting whatever they hear. That is why biblical discernment is so crucial in this day and age when so many ‘truths’ are fed to us.
As mature believers and witnesses for Christ, we must commit to studying the Scriptures on a daily basis, memorizing verses, and appropriating God’s promises, so that we might not be swayed by lofty arguments raised against the knowledge of God (1 Corinthians 10:5), and test the spirits to discern whether they are from God (1John 4).
Pray for enlightenment as you read your Bible. Ask the Spirit of God to open your mind to fully understand His Word, so that the hope you have in God’s grace becomes personal and strongly anchored in your heart.
