Waiting On God’s Promises

“This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” Genesis 15:14

God had promised Abram that He would bless him and give him descends more numerous than the stars. Yet, despite this promise, Abram took matters into his own hands and skipped ahead of God’s timing. Scripture tells us that Abram ‘listened to the voice of Sarai.’ Rather than waiting on God’s timing, he heeded his wife’s voice and, in the end, settled for less than God’s best.

As I read this passage, it made me wonder how many times I’ve tried to rush God? Am I willing to wait patiently for His timing, or do I forfeit the wholeness of His gifts by rushing ahead as I lean on my own resources in order to fulfill my desires? Truth is, waiting on God is never wasted time. Waiting on God is the very process by which He knits my will to His.

I recently found this short poem that really spoke to my heart. I pray it blesses you today.

The waiting is not empty space

But fertile ground where love takes place

A time to grow

To find my pace

To see His hand in every trace

Prayer: Lord, curb my impulse to rush ahead of you. Help me wait on your good promises, to ‘be still’ as I wait for your purpose and your plan to unfold. May the waiting space be fertile grown where seeds of faith and trust and hope take root and produce fruit that is pleasing to you. In your name I pray, Amen.

Thought: “We don’t like waiting, but that’s when God does some of His best work on our souls.”
