“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Matthew 5:8 ESV
Can I ask you a personal question? How’s your heart? Not physically but spiritually. Because your heart is where it all begins. It is the core of your being – your primal identity – and the source of your thoughts and actions.
Jesus says our mouth often reveals the condition of our hearts: “What comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart . . . “(Matthew 15:18-19). “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:33-34). To use an everyday illustration, what is in our cup is what will spill out. If tea is in my cup when one of the dogs jostles me, tea is what spills out.
“The heart is utterly crucial to Jesus. What we are in the deep, private recesses of our lives is what He cares about most. Jesus did not come into the world simply because we have some bad habits that need to be broken. He came into the world because we have such dirty hearts that need to be purified” (desiringgod.org).
The pure in heart – those who love and serve God simply because He is worthy of love and praise – are the ones who will see God. Not just amid the mundaneness of everyday life but for eternity.
Prayer: Purify my heart, O Lord. Remove any wrongful motives that might prevent me from loving you and loving my neighbor as you love me. May my intentions in serving you and serving others always be pure and driven out of love. Amen.
Thought: “Taking time to check our motives is crucial. I challenge myself with, “Will this make me more like Christ or less like Him?” Some other questions to ask are, “Will this help me get more healthy spiritually, emotionally, and physically?” and “Would the most spiritually mature person I know think this is a good choice?” Lysa Terkeurst
