“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life . . . But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” Matthew 6:25-34 ESV
What-ifs are like a spider web. The more we engage in speculation, the more we become captive to worry and anxiety. What-ifs are so plentiful that we could spend entire days consumed with possible catastrophes.
Jesus offers a fundamental revolution in our thinking: rather than preoccupying ourselves with what may or may not happen tomorrow, He urges us to turn our attention to Him and what is on our plate right now. Life is hard enough, so why add to that stress by giving in to suppositions? We need not fear tomorrow for nothing–nothing!–is out of His control. No concern is too big or too small for Him. No problem catches Him by surprise.
Prayer: Lord, to you I surrender all of my what-ifs. Today, I will choose to set my sights higher than my circumstances and focus on what you are doing today, right now, entrusting all of my tomorrows into your almighty hand. Amen.
Thought: There is no greater assurance than knowing God holds our tomorrows in His loving hands. He is already there, preparing every detail for each of His beloved children.
