The Problem with Henny Pennys

“Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” Matthew 6:23 ESV

In 1823, Just Mathias Thiele published an early version of the Henny Penny story in the Danish language. In Thiele’s untitled account, a nut falls on Kylling Kluk’s back and knocks him over. He then goes to each of the other characters, proclaiming that “I think all the world is falling” and setting them all running.

Some days, I feel like Kylling Kluk – or Henny Penny as we know her in the States – weighed down with concerns concerning what might – or might not – happen. Yet God urges me to seek Him first and leave those concerns to Him. To get ahead of myself is to anticipate the future without the grace God provides anew each morning to meet that day’s needs. So today, I choose to focus on this day and let God take care of the ones yet to come.

Prayer: “Lord, help me to begin each day surrendering my worries into your care. May my focus be on you and your will rather than what may or may not happen, trusting you to meet each day’s needs according to your mercy. In your name I pray, Amen.”

Thought: God is the God of ‘right now.’ He doesn’t want you sitting around regretting yesterday. Nor does He want you wringing your hands and worrying about the future. He wants you focusing on what He is saying to you and putting in front of you … right now. Priscilla Shirer
