The One Thing That Truly Matters

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Matthew 6:33 ESV

‘Things’ versus ‘kingdom’ is a matter of perspective. What might seem so important to us – food and clothing – are trivial and temporary when held up against the light of eternity. What God seeks are hearts and minds whose main desire and primary focus is fellowship with the almighty God. When He becomes our Number One, everything else falls into its proper place.

As children of God, we have a loving Father who knows our needs. In His mercy, He supplies not just what is basic to our survival but so much more. He lavishes us with good gifts, both material and spiritual. He fills our cup, then adds a little extra till it spills over. “And God is able to bless you abundantly so that in all things, at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work” 2 Corinthians 9:8.

The Message offers an interesting interpretation of verses 30-34: “Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes. If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met. Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.”

Prayer: Lord, it is so easy to fall back into a basics mentality that I forget what is essential. Reorient my thoughts and desires from the needing to the seeking and my calling to further your kingdom. Help me to worry less and trust you more. In your name I pray, Amen.

Thought: Don’t become so consumed with worry about tomorrow that you fail to see what God is doing in the right here and the right now.
