The people walking in darkness have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.
Isaiah 9:2 (NIV)
In July 2018, the world watched as twelve boys and their coach were rescued from a cave in northern Thailand. Though their original intention was to explore the cave system then leave, heavy rainfall flooded their exit route, trapping them deep within. Imagine their anguish and desperation as they lingered in total obscurity for days on end. Then, unexpectedly, a spill of light broke the darkness. In just one moment, their despair was turned into elation, their anguish was transformed into hope.
In many ways, their story is our own. We were lost and in need of a Savior. God could have shrugged and said, “I’m not going down to help them. They got themselves into this mess. Leave them to suffer the consequences.” But because of His great love for us, Jesus set aside His royal robes and all the splendors of heaven and came down to bring light to our dark and sinful world.
“I am the light of the world,” Jesus said. “Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). In His love, Jesus sought us, bringing hope and life, for darkness and light cannot coexist. Where light enters, darkness must flee. The world offers many substitutes and alternatives, but only Jesus vanquished the darkness forever – Jesus, the light of the world.
Thought: “With Christ, darkness cannot succeed. Darkness will not gain victory over the light of Christ.” – Dieter F. Uchtdorf
