“The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.” Exodus 14: 14 (ESV)
Have you ever experienced a Red Sea Moment? Times when the enemy was in hot pursuit, and you saw no way out?
My husband and I faced one of those Red Sea moments shortly before the pandemic hit.
It all started when my husband came down from working on the roof and sank into his chair.
“I don’t feel too well.”
Within minutes, Len was unable to even stand up on his own. There was no way I would be able to get him into the car to drive him to the hospital. So I called 911.
According to his surgeon, Len was suffering from one of the worst cases of metalosis ever recorded. Little shards of metal had been rubbing off his prosthetic hip and entered into his joint and bloodstream. The infection was so bad, it ate away half of his pelvis.
To make a long story short, Len endured three lengthy and complicated surgeries, spent a month in a rehab facility, and four months bound to a wheelchair. Needless to say, medical bills began to pile up. Then came the bill from Columbia Hospital for ten thousand dollars.
“What do we do now, God?” we asked, feeling like the Israelites when God told them to push forward. “How? There’s a Red Sea in front of us and a powerful enemy behind us!”
We prayed, then prayed some more. All the while, that Red Sea continued to confront us. It was all I could think about. It consumed my thoughts during the day and kept me awake at night. Oh that I had laid it down at the feet of Jesus instead of carrying the burden around with me day and night!
We decided to start a Go-Fund-Me, but that night I couldn’t sleep. God kept pressing on me to trust Him to provide. The next morning, Len and I agreed to shut down the Go-Fund-Me and continue to pray about our situation, trusting that the Lord would miraculously provide.
Several days later, Len called the hospital to see if we could arrange a payment plan. The Patient Accounts representative entered the billing number Len provided. Nothing. Next, he entered Leonard’s full name. Nothing. He entered Len’s medical record number. Still nothing.
It turns out that despite what the bill said, there was no balance on the account, nothing due, and nothing to pay off. There is no way to explain the unexplainable other than to say that God parted our Red Sea.
Oh the goodness of God for those who place their trust in Him!
‘Cause all my life You have been faithful
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God
