The Blessings of Meekness

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Matthew 5:5 ESV

Meekness is not weakness. On the contrary, it is strength under control. I like to think of meekness as a powerful stallion that has been tamed. The stallion doesn’t lose its power, it just learns how to keep it under control. Meekness is an attitude of submission to God as we entrust to Him the injustices and questions we face. Meekness embraces self-control. It refrains from lashing out – through actions or words – confident that God is our advocate and He will vindicate as He sees fit.

Meekness is about trusting God, committing our ways to Him then waiting for Him to act. It’s surrendering our battles to Him rather than taking matters into our own hands and being still rather than fretting in the face of evil. It’s resting in the promise that God will direct our steps because He delights in every detail of our lives (Psalm 37).

Meekness is being willing to submit to God’s purposes as we trust Him to work all things for good. Therein is the blessing: an abundance of peace and eternity with Him.

Prayer: Lord, work in my heart. Remove the impatience, the anger, that human urge to retaliate in the face of injustice. Help me surrender my battles to you and be still, knowing that therein is where I will find contentment and an abundance of blessings. Amen.

Thought: “Christ is the humility of God embodied in human nature; the Eternal Love humbling itself, clothing itself in the garb of meekness and gentleness, to win and serve and save us.” – Andrew Murray
