The Benefits of Praise

“Shout for joy in the Lord, O you righteous! Praise befits the upright.” Psalm 33:1 ESV

Praise is fitting, it is proper, it is becoming for those who are upright (honorable, honest, of good standing with God). I think of this as a well-fitting suit or outfit that reflects our standing with God. Because of her royal status, Princess Kate typically wears stylish and well-fitting outfits. I can’t imagine her wearing anything but nice clothes, given who she is and the family she represents.

Likewise, you and I are royalty. God calls us His sons and daughters (Romans 8:14), so it fitting, it is proper that praise be on our lips and in our hearts; not just in the quiet of our homes but at all times. Psalm 34:1 says, “I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.” Why? Because praise is the outpouring of a heart attuned to God. Praise is the ‘thank you’ of a heart that cannot stay silent.

Praise is good, it is healthy for the heart and mind as it turns our thoughts heavenward. Praise is a command with a blessing in return. It is an act of obedience and faith. And as we praise, we discover that our hearts are gladdened, hope is restored, and our worries put to rest, at least for a time.

Prayer: Tune my heart to yours, O Lord. May your praises ever be on my lips. To you be all the glory and praise, Amen.

Thought: You and I were created to give praise – not just on the mountain top but in the valley too.
