Swallowed Up

He will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign LORD will wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove his people’s disgrace from all the earth. The LORD has spoken. Isaiah 25:8 NIV

Some sections of the book of Isaiah can be challenging to read. Chapter after chapter portrays a people weighed down by darkness.

But Isaiah stops in the midst of his warnings and dire predictions, and says, “But wait! There is hope!”

God will swallow up death – not for a time, but forever.

Are you passing through a valley? Does everything around you seem dire and dark? I have good news for you: Jesus defeated the grave when He died on the cross. The one thing none of us can evade has already been conquered.

Revelation 21:4 promises that “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

Defeated-conquered-gone forever. In the face of all that seems wrong in our lives, in our country, and in our world, this one promise holds true that we have hope: death is not the end, it is merely “a turning of us over from time to eternity” (William Penn).
