Simple Faith

Guest post by author C.A. Simonson

Luke 1:18, 34 – “How can this be?” vs. “How WILL it be?”

Zechariah was an upright and holy priest who knew God’s laws and regulations. Yet he had doubts and fears when hearing God’s promise of a son. “How CAN this be?” He is startled and gripped with fear. He gave excuses: “My wife and I are too old.” He didn’t and was filled with doubt and fear. It cost him his speech as he was struck dumb for nine months.
The same angel, Gabriel, appears to young Mary. She was ‘troubled’ but filled with awe and wonder (not fear). “How WILL this be?” (v.34) She had an honest curiosity, but she fully believed the angel’s words would come true. No doubt or fear. “May it be unto me…” Mary said. Complete and simple faith. She knew God would take care of all the details with her parents, the townspeople, and with Joseph. She only had to be available and willing.

May we be like Mary when the impossible comes our way. Just believe. If God said it, He will accomplish it. Simple faith is all He asks of us.

“All things are possible to Him who believes.” (Mark 9:23)
