Our Words Matter

“Be mindful when it comes to your words. A string of some that don’t mean much to you may stick with someone for a lifetime.” — Virtues For Life

I find it intriguing that “words” and “sword” contain the exact same letters. Words, much like swords, have the power to harm, wound, or even break a person’s spirit.

Just yesterday, I received an email that truly shook me. Though the comments weren’t directed at me personally, their impact was lasting—they were harsh, critical, and served no constructive purpose. Rather than offering helpful feedback, this individual’s words were destructive. And that is not okay.

As I reflect on this experience, I recognize the seed of bitterness trying to take root in my heart. But bitterness is ultimately toxic and self-destructive. So, while I acknowledge my emotions and the pain caused, I refuse to let them define or destroy me.

And the scars left by her words will hopefully remind me to be mindful of my own words—to pause before speaking, to consider the manner in which I communicate, and to choose silence over any words that might wound or discourage others around me.

Words that dishearten or words that inspire—the decision lies with each of us.
