My Soul Finds Rest

Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him.Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. Psalm 62:1-2 NIV

It is disheartening to witness the divisiveness in our country. The left blames the right, the right blames the left, everyone points a finger at the next person, and policies change as quickly as the weather. The lack of stability has left us all wondering what will come next.

It’s easy to get sucked into the news because we care what happens to our country. Yet God invites us to a better way of living. He bids us turn our thoughts heavenward, to come and sit for a while and visit with Him, to share our thoughts and concerns, to listen to His wisdom and breathe in His presence. This is the kind of rest that will carry us through the day, come what may.

Let me ask you a personal question: How do you begin your day? Watching the news? Scrolling through social media? Or do you begin in prayer? Do you start your day in the Word of God? What you pour – or God pours – into your vessel each morning will determine your frame of mind and how your day unfolds.

Filling your vessel with God’s promises won’t make the problems go away, but it will remind you where to turn for help with your problems. We might not have influence or clout when it comes to changing what is happening in our country or around the world, but we know the One who does. “Cast all your cares upon Him, for He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).

Prayer: To you, Lord, I give my cares. Fill my heart today with your peace and your rest, despite all the dire warnings the media might throw my way. Remind me again to be still, knowing that you are in control. Amen.

Thought: “Do not have your concert first and then tune your instrument afterwards. Begin the day with the Word of God and prayer and get first of all into harmony with Him.” – James Hudson Taylor
