My Song is a Weapon

Guest Post by C.A. Simonson

“But I will sing of Your power; Yes, I will sing aloud of Your mercy in the morning; for You have been my defense And refuge in the day of my trouble.” (Psalm 59:16)

When nine-year-old Willie was kidnapped from his front yard, he feared for his life. Although from an atheistic home, Willie learned about God from his godmother. He was taught if he praised the Lord, God would help him in mysterious ways. So, Willie began to sing the gospel chorus, “Every Praise,” as loud as possible. Although his kidnapper threatened to shut him up, the young boy belted out his song for three hours. When the kidnapper could not take anymore, he pushed Willie out of the car into a random neighborhood. Unharmed, Willie ran to the nearest house and called his godmother. His song had become his weapon. He said, “When you sing, God will help you.” 1

There’s power in singing. Add praise to it, and it becomes a mighty weapon. In scripture, singers led the battle to war. (II Chronicles 20:21) Paul and Silas’s singing brought about an earthquake, freeing them from prison. (Acts 16:25-34)

The song “I Raise a Hallelujah” was written for a family whose two-year-old was dying. One line says, “My weapon is a melody… heaven comes to fight for me…. ” They believed. They sang a little louder, and their boy recovered miraculously.2

Let praise be your weapon when you’re troubled. Praise God for who He is. Heaven will fight for you, for God is your strength and song; (Isaiah 12:2-ESV) He has given you victory. It’s the power of praise that lifts your spirits and brings God’s power. So sing a little louder!

PRAYER: Lord, when my soul is troubled, put a song in my heart. Let me praise you with a melody from my innermost being. AMEN.
