More Than What We See or Know

“How can I curse whom God has not cursed? How can I denounce whom the Lord has not denounced? . . . The Lord their God is with them . . .” Numbers 23:8,21 ESV

King Balak had summoned Balaam to come to his aid. Overcome with fear at what he perceived to be a horde and a people that ‘cover the face of the earth,’ he resolved to thwart their approach by hiring Balaam to utter curses over the people of Israel.

As I read this passage of Scripture, I began to wonder if the Israelites knew what was going on around them. Were they even aware that Balak had hired Balaam to speak defeat over them? Whether we know it or not, you and I are under attack. We may not see it or perceive it, but there is an enemy who constantly tries to speak defeat over our lives. Ephesians 6:12 states, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

I am so glad God is on my side and that He fights on my behalf. When the devil tries to speak defeat into my life, God says, “No, not my child. You may not curse the one I have blessed.” Someday, I will see just how often God has fought my cause but for now just knowing God is on my side is enough.

Prayer: Though I may not see what you are doing on behalf, I can rest assured that you are with me. As long as I’m sheltered under your blessing, I can say with confidence “It is well with my soul.”

Thought: “The truth, even though I cannot feel it right now, is that I am the chosen child of God, precious in God’s eyes, called the Beloved from all eternity, and held safe in an everlasting embrace.” – Henri Nouwen
