Loving Like Christ

“Let all that you do be done in love.” 1 Corinthians 16:14 ESV

As I was pondering this verse and its application to my own life, the Holy Spirit led me to another Scripture that states, “He who does not love does not know God, for God is love” (1 John 4:8). 1 John 4:16 reaffirms this: “We know and trust the love God has for us. God is love, and the one who lives in love lives in God, and God in him.”

Love is the essence of God’s being. Love is God and God is love. Love is not an emotion I can dredge up. It is more than just a choice. It is acting in character with Christ toward those who are in my circle of influence – and sometimes beyond. It releases me from the burden of feeling so I am free to be Christ towards others, especially those who seem ‘unlovable’ to my limited – and, to be honest, sometimes biased – perception of individuals.

If I am in Christ and Christ is in me, then love has already been planted in me. It’s not some sentiment I need to chase after or some belief system that drives my conduct. I am enabled to love because Love Himself is within me.

Prayer: Lord, may my words and actions spill out as the overflow of the love that you have poured into me. Help me respond as you would respond, speak as you would speak, and act in a manner that is honoring and glorifying to you. Amen.

Thought: “Whenever we cannot love in the old, human way . . . God can give us the perfect way.” Corrie Ten Boom
