“So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31 (ESV).
This passage is part of a larger discussion on freedom in Christ. Paul urges the Corinthians to be mindful of the impact their actions might have on others. In essence, he is saying that, even if our intent is innocent enough, we should consider ridding our lives of anything that offends a non-believer or a fellow-believer.
This mindset runs contrary to what much of our culture advocates. We are encouraged to ‘stay true to yourself’ and not mind what others think. Yet as followers of Christ, we have a higher calling. We are called to be true to God, to lead by example, to be light and salt to those around us, and to put others first.
“God has called you to a free life, but you shouldn’t use that freedom to indulge in self-serving desires. Instead, you should use your freedom to serve one another in love, as that’s how true freedom grows.” Galatians 5:13 (MSG) In Christ we have freedom, but let us never use that freedom in a way that affronts others and offends the One who died for our freedom. Instead, let us strive to do all things in a way that reflects our faith and brings glory to God.
Prayer: May all that I say and do be honoring to you, Lord. Search my heart and know my thoughts. Show me if there is any grievous way in me. In your name I pray, Amen.
