“Whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disasters.” Proverbs 1:33 ESV
The Message translates this verse in the following manner: “First pay attention to me, and then relax. Now you can take it easy – you’re in good hands.”
One of our greatest struggles as human beings is a fear of the future. We watch the news, carefully follow the ups and downs of the Dow Jones, check the weather every morning so we’re prepared, we lock our doors, and change our passwords every other day. Fear began in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve hid from God. It is at the root of most of our behavior, especially when world events start listing in the wrong direction.
Yet God offers us an alternative to a life of fear: listen to God’s voice and heed His word. Pursue wisdom and seek God’s guidance daily. Not that disasters won’t happen, but we don’t embrace a Chicken Little mentality, dreading what might or might not happen at every turn.
Armed with His wisdom, we dwell at ease because we know the One who holds our future in His hands. Our focus is not as much on the What as on the Who. We can say with confidence, “It is well with my soul.”
Prayer: Today, I choose to live free from fear. I lay all of my worries, my concerns, my problems, at the foot of the cross, fully trusting you with my future. Amen.
Thought: “Somewhere between Pollyanna and Chicken Little, between blind denial and blatant panic, stands the level-headed, clear-thinking, still-believing follower of Christ. Wide-eyed yet unafraid. Unterrified by the terrifying. The calmest kid on the block, not for lack of bullies, but for faith in his older Brother.” – Max Lucado
