“Silence is the greatest gift we have.” – Mister Rogers
Last Tuesday, I took my cellphone to the store where I’d originally bought it. Although I’d purchased it two years prior, the battery was no longer holding a full charge. The clerk quickly identified the source of the problem: an app was constantly running in the background. He closed the app, then advised me to power off my phone and restart it at least once a week. “Turning your phone off for just a few seconds each week can help prolong your battery’s lifespan,” he said.
His comment brought to mind all those ‘apps’ in our lives that drain us—the constant noise, restless thoughts that disrupt our sleep, and the overwhelming number of obligations and commitments that exhaust our energy and sap our joy.
Technology, meant to simplify life, often intrudes on valuable moments of silence and quiet contemplation—moments intended for rest, self-reflection and honest conversations with loved ones.
It has grown more and more difficult to shut off and shut down the ambient noise and visual stimuli that bombard us—which is why we must be intentional about it and make a conscious effort to ‘power off’ for a few minutes each day and embrace those moments of stillness.
