Divine Joy

You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and new wine abound. Psalm 4:7 ESV

Psalm 4 was written by David during his flight from his son Absalom. These were not happy times. Yet, despite having lost everything, David was able to state, “You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and new wine abound.”

In a biblical context, grain and new wine were staples of sustenance. They symbolized God’s provision and favor (Deuteronomy 7:13). They epitomized prosperity and divine blessing. Yet David distinguishes between temporal blessings and eternal joy. His joy was found, not in his circumstances, but in his personal relationship with God.

Where are you today? Are you, like David, in a place of loss? Have you been reviled or disparaged by individuals who were supposed to be friends or family? Is your situation uncertain? Does the future seem bleak? I have good news for you, my friend.  You are not alone. The God who delivered David is the same God who sees you today. He sees your pain, hears your prayers, and collects every single tear you cry (Psalm 56:8). He didn’t abandon David in the wilderness and He certainly won’t abandon you.

Prayer: Lord, we are grateful that even in our darkest moments, your love and care bring us joy and assurance. Though we may not understand the why of our circumstances, we know you love us and you will never abandon us. So today, we choose to live in the joy you have poured into our hearts as we focus, not on what we have, but Whose we are. Amen

Thought: Joy is not necessarily the absence of suffering, it is the presence of God – Sam Storms
