ACCEPTING CHANGE

“The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid.” (Hebrews 13:5-6 NIV)

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1)

“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart. I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid. Do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV)

“Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:34 NIV)

 Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27 NIV)

Scripture repeatedly reminds readers not to be afraid and not to worry, but to seek the courage to press on through difficult times. No one can predict for certain what tomorrow will bring, but reading the scripture and prayer allow me to turn fear and stress into opportunities. “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” (Serenity Prayer)

Although at times change may be rewarding, it is often difficult. When negative or hurtful, we brace for what comes and seek ways to cope. We all experience periods of loss, weather disasters, political upheaval, relationship issues, fear of the unknown, and so on. But God created us to be flexible, to make the best of whatever comes. Our circumstances and experiences may change, God doesn’t.

My church congregation had to accept a different schedule as well as a new pastor. The morning eight o’clock service was eliminated. Our small, early group all loved our pastor and the companionship that a small service provided. Although this was a minor incident, not all of us agreed. A few members complained; another, stopped church attendance. However, most accepted the new schedule and the pastor with the realization that it was necessary. Change is a part of life.

As I age, I watch more friends suffer from loss, fear, and illness. At times, I wonder what will happen next, but I have no choice except to deal with each unwelcome change. I know God will listen to my prayers to help me accept and adapt to whatever comes my way. He will rescue me from fear and despair. At times, I might even figure out how to turn any change into a positive event.  

Sometimes God speaks to us through another. My church members listened when a man suggested we gather for a fellowship time at 8:00 before the 9:30 service. That has been successful. We encourage each other and discuss ways to serve our community. As for the new pastor, she is wonderful. Her morning worship is different than our past ones, but most of us are pleased. All things will work together for good for those who love Him and keep His commandments.

Thought: Jesus is the Lord of second chances. Each morning is a new day that I will approach with the best intentions: to be a loving person, to use my time well, to offer hope and joy to those I meet, to listen when others encourage me, to be a child of God. When I mess up, I will start over tomorrow.
