A Matter of Pride

The haughty looks of man shall be brought low, and the lofty pride of men shall be humbled, and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day. Isaiah 2:11 ESV

This verse (or variations thereof) is repeated several times throughout the book of Isaiah. If there is one sin God detests, it’s pride. Proverbs 16:5 says, “The LORD detests the proud; they will surely be punished.”

This text took me back to the events recorded in 2 Chronicles 26. King Uzziah started out so well. He ‘did what was right in the eyes of the Lord…and as long as he sought the Lord, God made him prosper’ (verses 4 and 5).

“But when he was strong, he grew proud, to his destruction” (vs 16). He veered outside of his God-given calling as king and stepped into a role to which God hadn’t called him. As a result, he lived out the remainder of his days alone and was excluded from the house of the Lord.

It is tempting, at times, to believe that our jobs, our money, our health, our family, and our ministry are the fruits of our lifestyle, choices, and hard work. They’re ours, we’ve earned them. We hold job, salary, rank, title, in high regard. We set great store by becoming self-sufficient and self-sustaining. And this mentality cracks the door to pride.

Truth is, all we are and have are gifts from our heavenly Father. If we boast, may it always be about Him and not about ourselves.

Today, ask God to give you a proper perspective when it comes to self and the Kingdom of God. In His kingdom, there is no room for pride. So leave it at the door.

God is not looking for success; He is looking for servants.
