“But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance; the Lord God of Israel is their inheritance, just as he said to them.” Joshua 13:33 (ESV)
When Joshua was dividing the land among the tribes of Israel, he did not give the Levites a physical inheritance. Because they were set apart and consecrated for the Lord’s work, they were not to receive an allotment like the other tribes. The Levites’ inheritance was God Himself.
Likewise, you and I – God’s holy priesthood – have received an inheritance in Christ that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for us (1 Peter 1:4-5). His Spirit in us is the guarantee of our inheritance (Ephesians 1:11). So now we live with ‘great expectation’ (1 Peter 1:3), knowing there is ‘great joy ahead’ (vs 6). If we could catch but a glimpse of what awaits us, then surely we wouldn’t cling so tightly to the here and now. In the words of C.S. Lewis, “There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind.”
So press on, weary traveler – your glorious inheritance waits for you just around the bend.
