This exchange between the blind men and Jesus reflects prayer in its simplest form: two men, recognizing their need, asking Jesus to heal them. Their plea was short, simple, but it was enough to catch His ear: “Lord, have mercy on us.”
God reveals that we too were once slaves. Unable to work ourselves free from the bondage of sin, we needed a savior. Jesus is the only One who can ever pay that debt. When He died on the cross, He took our sins upon Himself. As he died, He cried out “Tetelestai” (John 19:30). In ancient Greek, “Tetelestai” was used on receipts to indicate a debt had been paid in full. Nothing remained to be paid. Jesus’s declaration on the cross, highlights the complete payment for the sins of humanity.
When it comes to life, we have a creator who fashioned every part of our being. If anyone knows how we operate and what our purpose is, God does. So why do we tend to go looking for answers elsewhere?
What you pour – or God pours – into your vessel each morning will determine your frame of mind and how your day unfolds.
All too often, we find ourselves in a similar situation. We skip over certain verses that make us uncomfortable. We try to ignore God’s leading or the Spirit’s prompting. But discipleship isn’t about cherry-picking verses, embracing those verses that promise blessings while ignoring those Scriptures that challenge or question our personal beliefs.
If thou but suffer God to guide thee, And hope in Him thro’ all thy ways, He’ll give the strength, what-e’er betide thee, And bear thee thro the evil days;
We dwell at ease because we know the One who holds our future in His hands. Our focus is not as much on the What as on the Who. We can say with confidence, “It is well with my soul.”
